Thyroid Specialists in Toronto & Ontario
There are many ways to get specialist, quality care for thyroid disease in the Toronto area and other parts of Ontario. A first step may be to search the website of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario http://www.cpso.on.ca/docsearch/ for endocrinologists. (Endocrinology is the specialty that deals with thyroid disease.)
Since this search facility can sometimes be imprecise, a tip for finding all available Toronto endocrinologists or thyroid specialists here is to start by not selecting any specific geographic area in your search. Then be sure to click “Specialists” and
then select “Endocrinology and Metabolism" in the drop down box.” Scroll through the results: Many of the
doctors that show up are Toronto endocrinologists. Although some listed here have a
notation that they are not accepting new patients, it may be helpful to double-check with your physician. You will need a doctor’s referral to see any specialist in Ontario. Usually a referring physician is a family doctor but may also be a gynecologist or thyroid surgeon.
Another source of information on thyroid specialists or endocrinologists is the LMC Endocrinology Centres located in several areas of Ontario including Toronto and the GTA. See http://www.lmc.ca/html/aboutus.html (Click on "specialists" at top.)
In addition, Dr. Daniel Drucker, a thyroid specialist who will be leaving clinical practice next year to concentrate on research, provides a list of Toronto endocrinologists for those with thyroid cancer and thyroid nodules. See http://www.mythyroid.com/drdruckersoffice.html

Not to be forgotten are family physicians who in many cases can provide most or all the necessary care, especially if he or she is knowledgeable and experienced with thyroid patients. Sometimes however, due to doctor shortages, the first challenge for some, is just to find a family doctor in the first place who can then either give treatment or refer to a specialist. (For more information on family physicians see The College of Family Physicians of Canada.) But if your thyroid condition is complex or you have very persistent symptoms or questions beyond the scope of your family doctor, you should ask to be referred to a thyroid specialist or endocrinologist.
Several useful links for those without family physicians or suitable drug benefits are as follows: Health Care Connect: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/ms/healthcareconnect/public/default.aspx and the Trillium drug program for Ontario residents: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/drugs/trillium.html
Although we cannot recommend specific endocrinologists, we can provide a list of those endocrinologists and other physicians or health professionals who have addressed our chapter public education meetings on thyroid disease in the past. (See list below.) We have also provided some summaries of selected meetings or related articles. (Please note that some of these doctors may no longer be practicing in the Toronto area.)
